The Commons is a term in social and political philosphy to refer to resources--physical or digital--that are owned and managed collectively by a community rather than private individuals or exclusively by the state. The Commons is built on three main notions:
- Shared Resources
- Collective Governance
- The Act of "Commoning"
The shared resources of the Commons can be natural (land, water, air), cultural (language, music, stories), or digital (open source software, digital libraries, records). None of these resources are for sale, so they are available to everyone based on need and availabiity. Instead of having a boss or single property owner making rules, the Commons is run through democratic participation of all who make use of said resources, or the commoners--this is collective governance. The act of "commoning" refers to the idea of maintaining said resources. Instead of strict ownership, what is created is an ongoing relationship of people working together to ensure the resources in question stay healthy and available for everyone currently in the community, and those who might join in the future. It is a reclaimation of our lives from the market, because we believe that the essentials for a good life should belong to everyone, not used for power plays in pursuit of private profit.
DigiComms is an expression of a digital common third space where people can come and go as they please, make use of digital resources, help to build and maintain the platform by making sugesstions or contributions, and where people can socialize.
